Abstract

The main objective of the present communication is not limited only up to the publicity and extension of agroforestry as a multipurpose beneficial technique , rather it is an attempt to illuminate the new dimension of Agroforestry , through which the effective conservation of NTFPs can be achieved with simultaneous economic improvement of the farmers. The paper highlights the alarming level of the loss of forest cover. Keeping in view the potentials of the agroforestry , appropriate schemes have been formulated to conserve the NTFP resources along with simultaneous improvement of the economic conditions of the farmers. For the effective motivation of farmers to ensure the large-scale adoption of the proposed agroforestry schemes , the economic potentials of the agroforestry have been illustrated. It is expected that proper implementation of the proposed schemes can help in conservation of the NTFP resources with simultaneous economic improvement of the farmers.

Abstract

The study has been conducted to evaluate the economic dependency of tribal livelihoods and to explore the economic contribution of NTFP in their livelihoods in 50 selected villages of West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand state. The study reveals substantial contribution of NTFP in the tribal livelihoods. Six major NTFPs of this forests, managed under 'Mundari-khuntkattidari' system of traditional management by the Tribals, were included in the present study. The economic returns from NTFP was found to have suffered a lot as a result of some major constraints like- unorganized trade, lack of proper storage and value addition facilities and marketing by The middle men. Besides the economic valuation of NTFPs contribution in tribal livelihoods, the gaps in existing practices and knowledge levels leading to low returns were also identified and factors affecting the profitability were screened with some suggestion to further enhance the economic returns.

Abstract

The analysis of history of forestry education is documented to illustrate the evolutionary aspects of forestry education in this country. A keen review of challenges of forestry education with respect to demand of the forestry professionals and the continuing educational packages have revealed ever widening gap in terms of required knowledge and skills th vis-à-vis the actual course modules being followed. The intervention of 4^th Dean's Committee of Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), New Delhi, is discussed to demonstrate the inadequacies of the course modules and impracticality of the proposals for reorganization of departments of forestry faculties. Cogent recommendations, based upon new perspectives of forestry education, aimed at mitigation of the mismatches between the existing forestry education system and national requirements of forestry professionals/ scientists and teachers are recorded to provide sound backup for better planning of the forestry education system in India.
